Clinically skilled, deeply committed, and short on time.
The learners were nurse practitioners and health providers serving veterans. They knew the clinical facts. What no one had trained them to notice was how their own words and assumptions could push a patient away from treatment.
The gap wasn't knowledge. It was bias no one had named.
Stigma showed up in small moments: a word choice, a tone, an assumption about who deserves another chance. Those moments kept veterans from seeking treatment or staying in it. The organization needed training that reached busy practitioners, worked facilitated or self-paced, and moved attitudes, not only awareness.
Put providers in their patients' shoes.
Instead of presenting facts about addiction, the experience is built on perspective-taking. Real care moments, real language, and myths learners could test against what the research says. The goal was empathy as a clinical skill.
Empathy as a clinical skill, not just a value.
Practice the hard moment before it happens.
Scenario-based interactions asked providers to choose what to say in a tense moment, then showed how a patient might hear it. In live sessions, facilitated discussion let them rehearse new language with peers.
Five assets that work together, or alone.
The learning didn't end when the module did. Facilitators got everything they needed to lead sensitive conversations, and providers left with tools they could use back on the floor.
